Reflection 1 # Tandy

This was my first time traveling internationally and I did not know what to expect. My mother gave me the be aware of your surroundings and keep your phone with you always speech before I left. It is strange being the foreigner when you are usually the native. I live in a country where English is the first language and others came after. Everyone else had to acclimate to the culture to live in the states.  I have had to adjust to the Italy atmosphere specifically learning Italian. It is so difficult to communicate with the locals when there is a language barrier. I have to use hand gestures and point to pictures of items as a communication form. I think about others in the states that have experienced this also when I have these encounters. The lifelong occupations are an aspect that was different for me. I could not imagine doing the same job for my entire life but would want to change it. I applaud them for their love and care in their work. They take pride in their job because this is their career. I know that If I did not like a job, I could easily quit and find another one. Employment is not based on merit but based on your network. The meal/food aspect is different for me. Each meal is sit-down and can last for over two hours. These meals foster friendships through extended conversations and delicious wine. I did not know that not finishing your food was rude until I studied up on European culture. There are no to-go’s because all meals are eaten fresh and at the table. There is no such thing as “fast food” in Grado. Sometimes, I just want a cheeseburger and fries but cannot get one. Food is for enjoyment and experience compared to a quick meal.
