Second Reflection
June 8, 2017
Although it’s only been a little over a week, I have been
learning so much about the diverse culture in Italy. One thing we’ve been
dealing with lately that surprised me was with the type of things you have to
pay for. For instance, in order to visit Venice for a day we had to pay $350
just to travel over the bridge to get there. Additionally, I do understand that
if you need to use a restroom at a restaurant you should buy something first.
This is very similar in America too. However, I was surprised by the scarcity of
public restrooms for the people who don’t want to pay. The one restroom that we
did find was blocked by gateways where you have to pay to get in. This just
surprised me because in America if you have to go to the bathroom it’s slightly
easier to get access to it.
One thing I truly appreciated in Italy was the respect for
the environment. Although I was just complaining about our professor having to
spend $350 to go over the bridge, I realize that this is more to help prevent
air and noise pollution. Also, the rooms we’ve stayed at have also been very
environmentally friendly. The hotel rooms don’t crank the air conditioning as
much as they do in America. Additionally, I’ve noticed things like when you
open the outside door of a hotel room, the air conditioning shuts off. Also,
you need to put a card in a slit in order to make the lights turn on. When we
visited Venice, we saw a statue of giant hands holding up a building. This
symbolizes the efforts of holding up the city from sinking due to global warming.
This shows that Italy is a lot more proactive about protecting the environment
than America.
